Wokorach basks in A.S.B.C Vaucluse move, targets Super 14

Just a year after landing a dream move to France with fifth division side Bourges XV, Phillip Wokorach moved a notch higher with the more established A.S.B.C Vaucluse securing his signature in July.

Wokorach’s move to the third division side means he is two tiers away from the top 14, France’s premium rugby division. Wokorach’s journey from the now shattered Nakawa quarters to France is one of belief, perseverance, discipline, hard work and talent name it all.

He might already be earning a lump sum but more is yet to come for the 26 year old. Another catchy spell at his new side will definitely get bigger sides calling thus bigger pay but he is refusing to get taken up by monetary gains. “For now, I’m not looking at the money, I want to use this as a stepping stone to get into the top 14, “he said on securing the move.

The former Hima Heathens prodigy has easily grown into one of Uganda’s greatest rugby players. He is a darling back home, let it be sevens or test rugby, the boy will leave fans on the edge of their seats. It was at Kyadondo where the journey began as a tag rugby player before moving to Stallions, Buffaloes and Heathens in that order.

It was from there that he landed his first lucrative move with Kenyan side Kabras Sugar. While in Kenya for two year, Wokorach left a mark by winning every individual accolade that was there for the taking. He became a sensation with his ability to beat defenders with the cheekiest of skills. His flare won Kabras Sugar fans and within no time, he was on the plane to France to sign with Bourges XV.

His move inspires the next generation especially those kids from the wanting communities. When they hear of his story, they get the feeling anything is possible if you keep doing the right things as you never know who is watching. While playing at the2018 Amsterdam 7s, a stranger in the stands was moved and approached Wokorach. The stranger would later engineer his move to Europe and the rest is history. The message from Wokorach is simple, keep putting in the hard work.

In Uganda, football is the more fashionable route to professional sport for many young sportsmen but Wokorach’s progress could have reminded ruggers that the window is wide open.
